Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking of buying a swimming pool but not sure where to start? We’ve complied a list of Frequently Asked Questions to try and help.

Your questions, answered…

Are you considering buying a swimming pool for your home, but not sure where to start? We’ve compiled a list of questions we hear all the time, to help you get started. From planning permission to heating options – we cover it all, so, let’s dive in.

Will I require planning permission?
Swimming pools located outside, that will be for private use solely, will not require planning permission, unless it structural affects any existing buildings or foul drainage network. If your property is listed, located within a conservatory area, green belt or the permitted development rights have been removed, you may require planning permission. We recommend you speak with your local council planning department for personalised guidance.

Indoor Swimming Pools will require Building Regulations consent, instructing an architect for the building design would be a good place to start. We are happy to work alongside your architect to design and construct your pool. We would recommend contacting your local planning department before contacting an architect, to gather what is required for your property.

What are the running costs associated with a Swimming Pool?
The running costs will differ depending on the size of your pool and extras you have included into the pool design. When estimating monthly or yearly costs, the chemicals being used, maintenance plans and fuel source should be considered. Using a thermal pool cover will reduce heat loss and heating costs.
Should our swimming pool be covered?
Yes, for many reasons your pool should be covered when not in use. The cover will keep the pool safe, clean of debris and reduce heat loss, which will also reduce your running costs. For irregular shaped swimming pools, it is important to install a cover custom to your pool shape, to ensure the cover is effective. The prevention of pool accidents is paramount, particular covers are available to prevent children and animals from falling into the pool.
What types of heating options are available?
There are a number of options available to heat your swimming pool including, gas, electricity, oil, ground and air source heat pump, solar, wood burners and wind turbines. Outdoor swimming pools are able to run on renewable energy, but indoor pools require dehumidification and renewable is not suitable.
Can you help me with the design?

Yes! We would love to assist you in achieving your dream swimming pool. Summit can build a bespoke design package based around you and your existing garden, or create a redesign of your outside space to incorporate your new pool.
